Arlington, Texas - The Xi Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., in partnership with the Xi Theta Omega Foundation and the Veda Knox Elementary School Family Involvement program, hosted the 15th Annual Family Expo, on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at Veda Knox Elementary School.
This unique, family-focused event provided valuable resources to over 100 families in and around Tarrant County. From the Teen Fitness Guru to workshops on health, finance and life skills, the Family Expo, offered an array of activities designed to enhance everyone’s physical and mental well being. Through this event, Xi Theta Omega is able to raise awareness about health issues that affect the African American community and increase community involvement.
Educational workshops allowed participants of all ages to learn and discover new ways to maintain or improve their overall health and level of fitness in fun and interactive ways. The younger children were entertained by clowns, balloon art, and face painting as they were introduced to the five major food groups focusing on healthy nutrition and serving size. A fitness expert provided valuable sessions to teach workout routines to keep teenage students moving towards maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Adult workshops focused on disease prevention, home safety tips, and personal budgeting. Vendors were also onsite to provide information and materials to educate and promote positive healthy activities. Additionally, Carter Blood Care was present giving many of the participants an opportunity to donate blood and gain insight on the importance of donors.
Attendees enjoyed breakfast, lunch, and wonderful and exciting giveaways. Members from our sponsored undergraduate chapter, Zeta Mu, served as hostesses along with Xi Theta Omega’s teen mentoring group, the ACOLYTES. The grand finale of the event was entertainment provided by local area high school step teams, and the presentation of the 2010 Community Awards for Woman of the Year, Media Award and Business Leader of Excellence Award. The Family Expo falls under Platforms I, II, III and V.
